Graduate Students

I am looking for one or two bright, creative, motivated and collaborative students with a keen interest in microbial ecology, biogeochemistry or biomineralization. As a graduate student, you will be working on applying your knowledge through research projects, developing new ideas, and independently managing your projects. You will learn how to write grants, publish your work in referenced journals, make presentations at scientific conferences, to network, to conduct lab and field work. This will be a challenging but very rewarding and fun learning experience.

I don’t expect incoming students to be experts in ecology or biogeochemistry; in fact, I welcome applicants with unique backgrounds and strengths that will compliment my own expertise. You should, however, have enough experience or knowledge of the subject to be certain that this general field is something you are passionate about.

You can check out our research projects, but you can also think about your own project that can expand the group’s research into new territory if the questions are compelling. It is not necessary that students arrive with a concrete dissertation topic in mind, however, it is desirable that students have a general idea of the questions or topics they are interested in studying.

If you would like to further discuss graduate opportunities in our lab, please send me an email and the following information if possible:

1. An outline of your research interests and why my lab is a good fit for you.
2. A description of your previous research experience.
3. Contact information for three references (if available).
4. A list of relevant coursework (with grades).
5. General and advanced GRE scores (if available).

Please contact me even if you do not have all this information together but you are interested in joining our group! You may find more information about Graduate Programs on our Department website, and application procedures on the Graduate Admissions website.

Interested students who need financial support may apply for graduate assistantships through our department graduate program or if qualified they may apply for some of the graduate fellowships.
